About The Teddy Bear / Shih Tzu-Bichon:

The Teddy Bear is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise and is also known as a Zuchon or Shichon. This popular designer breed is loved for its playful, happy, and easygoing personality. Teddy Bears are a non-shedding, allergy-friendly breed that makes an excellent companion and lap dog. Their cheerful nature and sturdy build make them a wonderful choice for first-time dog owners, families with children, and homes with other pets. Teddy Bears are social, clever, and entertaining dogs that enjoy spending time with their family. They love playing games such as tug or fetch, and most of their exercise needs can be met with indoor play. They also enjoy running around the backyard or taking short walks around the block. Their sturdy body allows them to do well with children of all ages, although young children should always be taught how to properly handle a small puppy. They bond closely with all members of the family but may be a little cautious around strangers when first meeting them. They are intelligent and trainable, although both the Shih Tzu and Bichon sides of the mix can contribute a stubborn streak. Training should be direct, consistent, and easy to understand so they know exactly what is expected of them. They respond best to praise, treats, and positive reinforcement, while a firm “no” is usually enough if you catch them doing something they should not. Early puppy classes are a great way to build confidence, establish good manners, and give first-time owners a better understanding of training. Their soft, wavy coat requires regular grooming to keep it healthy and free of tangles. Brushing several times a week with a sturdy comb or pin brush will help prevent mats and keep the coat looking its best. Professional grooming every 8 weeks is recommended to maintain their appearance. Routine ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care are also important parts of their regular grooming routine. The Teddy Bear is a well-rounded little companion that adapts well to many different family environments. Their loving personality, playful spirit, and devotion to their family make them a wonderful addition to almost any home, bringing years of happiness, companionship, and unconditional love. A well-trained Teddy Bear is an even more enjoyable companion and will reward your time and consistency for years to come.
