About The Coton de Tulear:

The Coton de Tulear originated in the southern part of Madagascar and was developed in the 1600s. They are closely related to the Bichon Frise, and their soft, cottony coat is where they get their name. “Coton” is the French word for cotton, and “Tulear” refers to the southern region of Madagascar where the breed originated. Their current purpose is that of a companion and playmate, and they truly live up to that role. They are devoted to their family, have a happy-go-lucky personality, and make an excellent choice for families with children, first-time dog owners, and homes with other pets. Cotons are friendly, alert dogs that enjoy spending time with their family and love outdoor adventures. They are happiest joining you on weekend camping trips, visiting the dog park, running around the backyard, or going for a walk around the block. They are also happy playing indoors, where most of their exercise needs can be met. While they may be a little cautious around strangers at first, they are naturally alert and make good watchdogs. They can become a little barky if that behavior is encouraged or reinforced. They are agile, enjoy games, and can even be taught activities such as flyball or agility. For those with pools or boats, many Cotons also enjoy the water. They are intelligent and trainable, although they may have an obstinate side that requires consistency and patience. Because of their gentle personality, they respond best to positive reinforcement, praise, and treats rather than harsh corrections. Keeping training fun and encouraging will help them succeed, and basic puppy classes are a great way to build confidence and establish good manners. Their long, soft coat has a slight wave and requires brushing at least three times a week to prevent mats from forming. Because their hair is very soft, a sturdy comb works best to reach all the way to the skin where tangles first begin. Professional grooming every 8 weeks will help keep their coat looking its best, and many owners choose a shorter puppy cut for easier maintenance. Routine ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care are also important parts of their regular grooming routine. The Coton de Tulear is a well-rounded little dog that adapts well to many different lifestyles. Their loving personality, warm nature, playful spirit, and devotion to their family make them a wonderful companion that will bring years of joy, laughter, and unconditional love to your home.
