About The Shih Tzu:

The Shih Tzu, whose name means “Lion Dog,” originated in Tibet, where the breed has existed since about the first century AD. They were later brought to China during the seventeenth century and were bred in the imperial courts of Peking as companion dogs for royalty, becoming especially popular during the Ming dynasty. Bred for companionship, the Shih Tzu excels in that role. Their affectionate, friendly personality makes them an excellent choice for first-time dog owners, families with children, and homes with other pets. Shih Tzus are friendly, outgoing dogs with a wonderful sense of humor that bond closely with their family. They do well with children of all ages and get along well with other pets, although younger children should always be supervised to ensure they handle a puppy gently. They are not an overly active breed, and most of their exercise needs can be met through indoor play. They also enjoy spending time outside, taking short walks, playing in the backyard, or simply following their owner around the house. Their long body, short legs, full curly tail, and pushed-in face give them their distinctive appearance. Because of their shortened muzzle and narrowed nasal passages, they may snore during naps and should be monitored during vigorous activity in hot or humid weather. They are intelligent dogs but can have a stubborn side, so training should be direct, consistent, and patient. Because of their gentle nature, they respond much better to praise, treats, and positive reinforcement than harsh corrections. Keeping everyone in the household consistent with training methods will help them learn good manners and build confidence. Their long, straight coat is non-shedding and may be a good choice for some people with mild dog allergies. Regular brushing several times a week with a sturdy comb or pin brush will help prevent mats and tangles and keep the coat looking its best. Professional grooming every 8 weeks is recommended to maintain their appearance. Routine ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care are also important parts of their grooming routine. The Shih Tzu is a well-rounded little companion that adapts well to many different lifestyles. Their affectionate personality, playful spirit, and devotion to their family make them a wonderful companion that will bring years of happiness, laughter, and unconditional love to your home.
