About The Jack Russell:

Spunky is a good way to describe a Russell, as we call them, Rotten Russell's. They really aren't that bad, I think they are a lot of fun! There are two types of Jacks, a smooth coat and a rough coat. They also come in the longer leg type, also known as a Parsons Russell, or the shorter leg, this is my preference. Most Jacks are red and white but I have also seen them in a black and white version. A Jack is a working dog and was breed for ratting out the granaries of yesteryear. For their size they are very strong. They are great for critter control. Jacks are highly intelligent and the most misunderstood breed around. If trained properly they are excellent dogs. They are very alert and agile. Jacks are great companions, tough in their own right, and are actually very lovable. They are great with children of all ages and other pets if socialized from the start. They really do think they are much bigger than they are. They will warm up to strangers very quickly. They will let you know if something is going on outside. Their mind is active so they need some good stimuli to keep them from not getting bored, try some of the intra-active toys that are now available. A Jack will test the household rules so black and white rules work the best. Keep it consistent, and that means the whole family. Puppy classes are strongly advised, especially for the first time owner. A trained Jack is a great dog, an untrained one will be a nightmare. They will enjoy playing in the house with you but will really love some outside activity and walks as well. They will love to play ball and fetch as it seems like they can run for hours. The only grooming you will need to do is with a curry brush a couple times a week to remove any dead hairs. Jacks are really great dogs; just remember to train them correctly.
