About The Havanese:

The Havanese originated in Europe but later traveled to Cuba, which is considered its home country. They are closely related to the Bichon Frise and the Maltese, a connection that is evident in both their appearance and personality. Originally bred to be companion dogs, the Havanese excels in that role. They are cheerful, clever, intelligent, and affectionate, making them an excellent choice for first-time dog owners, empty nesters, families with children, and homes with other pets. Their sturdy build allows them to do well with children of all ages, although young children should always be taught how to properly handle a puppy. Havanese are social dogs that enjoy spending time with their family, but they also appreciate having their own space from time to time. They are playful, friendly, outgoing, and have a wonderful sense of humor. They happily greet most people they meet and are not typically known for being good guard dogs. While they can become barky if that behavior is encouraged, consistent guidance from an early age can help prevent excessive barking. Most of their exercise needs can be met with indoor play or time in the backyard, although they also enjoy short walks and visits to the dog park. They are intelligent and eager to please, making training enjoyable when using positive reinforcement. Because of their sensitive nature, they respond much better to praise, treats, and consistency than harsh corrections. Rewarding good behavior and using a firm “no” when needed will help them understand expectations. Early training and socialization are excellent ways to build confidence and establish good manners. The Havanese has a straight to slightly wavy coat that is considered low-shedding and low allergy. Their fine hair should be brushed two to three times a week with a sturdy comb to help prevent mats and tangles. Professional grooming every 8 to 12 weeks will keep their coat looking its best. Routine ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care are also important parts of their regular grooming routine. The Havanese is a well-rounded little dog that adapts well to many different lifestyles. Their cheerful personality, playful spirit, and loving nature make them a wonderful companion that will bring years of happiness, laughter, and unconditional love to your family.
