About The Great Dane:

The Great Dane is an ancient breed, it is estimated that they date back to 3000 BC. They are related to the Wolfhound, Old English Mastiff, and the Greyhound. They were originally bred as a watch dog and also used for hunting wild boar. These giant dogs found their way into many Noble homes across the world. The Great Dane is sometimes called the gentle giant due to their calm and careful temperament. They love the affection of their family and will often try sitting on their owners lap. They love to please their family and despite their size are easy to work with. Danes are sleek and athletic, with muscular bodies and long, narrow heads that are massive in size. Their bodies tend to be as long as they are tall. A Dane makes a great house dog and should not be left outside all day. Because of their size a Dane does need room and will not do well in a small home or apartment. Indoors they will be quiet and well mannered, but will need at least a long walk on a multiple times a week. They are fairly active and energetic and a big back yard that is fenced in would be preferable. As puppies they will need about 90 minutes daily of play time, as an adult that will drop to 30 minutes. They are a soft natured breed with a gentle and good-natured disposition. They are easy to train as they love to please their master. They are people oriented and will gladly accept affection from most humans. If they think that one of their owners is in danger, they can become protective. The Dane is tolerant with other pets and are great with kids of all ages. They are not known to be vocal but have a powerful bark when needed. Coat maintenance is pretty simple with them because their hold a short coat, use a slicker brush weekly to remove dead hairs. This is a shedding breed. Feeding for a Dane, we do not recommend scheduled feeding but instead free choice is much better as the dog will only graze feed. A common potential problem with them is bloat so allowing them to nibble instead of gorging will help with this. Another thing that will be needed is an elevated bowl, you would want one that sits about chest high to help with the potential of bloat. All in all this is a great dog to own however one down side is their short life span.
