About The Yorkshire Terrier:

The Yorkshire Terrier, known also as a Yorkie, is mainly known for its long flowing and silky coat. They come to us from Yorkshire England. Although they were breed for ratting out the granaries, that is not there current function here in the states, far from it. Don't be surprised to find something at your door step, they are still a terrier. The Yorkie is an excellent companion who will bond very tightly to you. They will do well with a family environment but they will have their favorite. A Yorkie is known for picking one member of the family as their own. They do have an independent lifestyle and mindset. They are a small terrier who is afraid of nothing and thinks they are a Pit Bull. A Yorkie is brave and bold and will alert you to strangers or caution. The Yorkie is considered courageous, active if raised that way and are very intelligent. They are loving, vigilant and alert. They will make a good alarm system. A Yorkie will do well with children and other pets if you socialize them to that type of lifestyle. Due to their smaller size they will not take well to rough housing from the kids or anyone for that matter. Please instruct the children how to properly handle this small of a dog. In fact this is more of a Momma dog and not really for the kids. Most of their activity and playfulness will be met in the house. They will enjoy going for short walks but it won't be a necessity. They will also enjoy going outside very much to play in the back yard and help with the yard work. Training a Yorkie may be a challenge as they tend to be very stubborn and obstinate. Keep in mind they are independent thinking dogs, they will do it when they want. You will want to be very consistent and patient with them. Do it over and over and over and they will know what you want of them. Use praise and love for the good they do and a firm NO for the not so good. For the first time owner, puppy classes will be a must. A Yorkie is a non-shedding dog and will need to be combed out several times a week with a slicker brush or hard comb. Watch for matting on the back of the legs and around the ears. They will also need to go to the groomers about every 10 to 12 weeks so your groomer can wash, clip, trim their nails and pluck any hair out of their ears. Their hair does grow a little slower than some of the other non-shedding dogs. A Yorkie is a great companion and a wonderful dog that will be waiting for you to arrive home every time. One of my little house buddies is a T-Cup Yorkie and yes she is spoiled!
