About The Bichon Frise':

The Bichon Frise' is believed to have originated in possibly Belgium or France. They are also believed to be descendants of the Barbet, a French water retriever. The Bichon was a common sight in fourteenth-century France as small lap dog. This happy little dog became the pampered pet of the French, Spanish and Italian royalty. The word Frise' means curly-haired which is very fitting. They are considered a no-shed and a hypo-allergenic dog. They are a charming and almost clownish dog that bonds quickly with their family and is considered one of the best all-around companion dogs. They will fit well into a family that does have other pets and/or children. They do well with children of all ages however the younger ones, children that is, will need to be taught how to properly handle a young and small dog. They are very social and will love all, not a guard dog here. They are clever and entertaining with few faults. They are playful and frisky and will look forward to a game of tug or toss the ball down the hall. Most of their exercise needs are met in the house but they will without a doubt love going outside to play as well. They are a proud breed that does have a gentle and sensitive side to them. Their desire to please you is great. They are best suited for a family companion and some will also do well as a therapy dog. Their desire to please will come in handy during training time, they thrive on positive reinforcement so use this to your advantage. They will not take kindly to a more harsh approach given their more sensitive nature. A happy tone to your voice doubled with a treat helps to get the point across. As in all training, do it over and over again until they catch on to what it is that you want them to do. Their coat will require some maintenance, it is curly and very soft. You will want to comb them out several times a week. If you wish to maintain their natural curl you will want to use a hard comb or pin brush. If you like the show dog look you will want to use a slicker brush. You may find it necessary to trim the hair around their face or back end from time to time. You will also need to go to the groomers around every 8 weeks to keep them tidy. Your groomer will bathe, clip, pluck hair from their ears and trim their nails. This is a well-rounded dog that will fit into an apartment as well as a house and would be a good choice for the first time owner.
