About The Basset Hound:

The Basset Hound was bred in France during the medieval times and was used for trail games. Their short and thick bodies were particularly helpful in running under thick brush to flush out rabbits. The Basset was a favorite of Napoleon III. They came to America in the early 1800's and quickly became popular household pet. They were still used for rabbit hunting back than and some folk still do so today. They are independent but social and tend to love everyone. They are calm, patient and playful, not to mention slightly clumsy as pups. They are extremely kind and easygoing. They will be very fond of all family members and accepting of most strangers. They can be stubborn. Food is usually near the top of their agenda so caution should be taken so they do not get overweight. They have a deep bark as you would expect with a Hound and can become single minded when it comes to running a trail they have picked up outside. They are excellent playmates for the kids and get along well with other pets. Because of their elongated back, children should not sit on them or pull their ears. Their ears are the trade mark for a Basset and can get into the food or water bowl. Some people will pin their ears behind their head until they are done eating. Because of their bond with the family they are not partial to being left alone for long periods of time so you may want to get two, or at least another playmate. They are not an overly active dog, playing in the house is great however they love the outdoors. Take them for walks and let them run the back yard. They may not be the fastest thing on the earth but they do have good stamina. Their coat is short, dense, smooth and shiny. They will shed; if you feed a natural diet this will keep their coat soft and the hair less brittle so they will not shed as much. Use a curry brush on them several times a week to remove any dead hairs. Because of the extra-long and heavy ears that they have you will also need to clean their ears on a regular basis. Use some ear cleaner and Q-Tips to remove the dirt and you won’t get any ear infections. They are intelligent but puppy classes would be highly recommended. They are stubborn and strong so walking properly on a leash is a must. Be very consistent and patient with them, they will get it. Remember that they like to eat so treats will go a long, long way. This is an awesome dog, how can you look at that face and not want to give them a hug.
