About The Cairn Terrier:

The Cairn Terrier comes to us from Scotland. Its cousins, the West Highland White Terrier and the Scotty are also from different regions of Scotland. Their original function, as with most terriers, was for rodent control and maybe a little light hunting. A Cairn is a non-shedding dog ok for most of you with allergies. Their coat is a little wavy and slightly softer than that of the Westie. They will be a hardy pup with a bold and energetic, self-assured, but exceptionally loyal attitude. They are social, merry and cheerful. Being a terrier, their endurance and attitude is more likely to be that of a much bigger dog in a little body. They are tough and won't need any pampering, they will hold their own. They are loyal to their family but are an independent thinking dog with a tendency to be stubborn. They are however very intelligent. They are cunning and self-confident and love to play with balls and toys. You will want some inter-active toys for them to keep their mind busy, they could find something to do if left alone to long with nothing to play with. Another playmate will help as well. Due to their sturdy body they will do well with children and other pets. Training with these guys should be strict. Don't let their amusing antics stop you from correcting them or they will get the upper hand, and they can do this. Keep your training very black and white with the whole family on the same page. They will have the ability to figure out who will let them get away with what. For a novice owner we would recommend puppy classes so that you get off on the right foot. Since they don't shed there will be some coat maintenance, although it's not complicated. Use a pin brush or hard comb to comb them out several times a week and a trip to the groomers about every 8 to 12 weeks should do the trick. A Cairn is a very enjoyable dog with a well-rounded nature, a little bit of a softer nature than it's Terrier cousins, you will totally love this breed.
