About The Shorkie / Shih Tzu-Yorkie:

A Shorkie is a mix between a Shih Tzu and a Yorkie. This is another designer mix that is very popular with our devoted Yorkie customers mainly due to their happy personality but also a little on the lovey side, that comes from the Yorkie. A Shorkie is a no shed dog and may be a good choice for those of you with allergies. They are happy and friendly with an easy going personality and would be considered on the reserved side, they bond well with the family but they will most likely pick a favorite. They also may be cautious of strangers and alert you to their concerns. They make an excellent companion and napping buddy. They are social, clever and entertaining. They are intelligent and will probably have a stubborn side to them. Their activity needs are easily met running the house and back yard. They will enjoy short walks around the block that is unless you would rather carry them. They will do well with older children and other pets but you will want to socialize them to that type of family environment. Make sure that young children know how to handle a small and young dog. They are trainable however you will want to keep your training very direct. Both sides of this mix could throw a little attitude your way. Keep your methods black and white so that they know what you expect of them. You will need to be consistent and persistent. Always keep it positive with praise and some treats. Reward good behavior, if you catch them doing something wrong a firm NO will work. For the first time puppy owner we would suggest that you enroll in some puppy classes. This will give you a better working knowledge of training and it's good for the dog also. Their hair coat is soft and silky with some wave to it and will need combed out several times a week with a hard comb or pin brush. They will also need to go to the groomers about every 8 to 12 weeks or so. Your groomer will wash and clip them and also do their nails and pluck out any extra hair out of their ears. Just remember about the training, a well-trained dog is much more enjoyable than one who is not. This is a nice little pup and one that I can see being very pampered.
