About The Havanese:

The Havanese originated in Europe but traveled to Cuba which is known as its home country. They are related to the Bichon and the Maltese which is very clear when you met them and see their personality. The Havanese was bred to be a companion dog; this is a purpose that they serve well. They are cheerful, clever and intelligent. They have a sturdy body so they will do well with all ages of children and they also do well with other pets. Young children should be taught how to handle a young pup. The Havanese sometimes will want its own space and this should be respected by all members of the family. They are very social but resent constant handling, teasing, or harassment. They can become barky if not taught as a pup not to do so. This can be done by not encouraging that type of behavior. When you first get home and they are going crazy, ignore them until they calm down. They are sensitive, playful, friendly, and affectionate and have a great sense of humor. They are outgoing and will take to almost everyone. They probably will not make the best guard dog. They are playful and active, not hyper-active, most of their play needs will be met running through the house or back yard. They will enjoy going outside with you and also going for short walks or trips to the doggie parks. They are intelligent and eager to please and will respond better to an upbeat and positive approach to training. Use happy praise and some treats to reinforce this. They will respond poorly to a harsh type of training. Reward them when they do something good or desired and a firm NO will be enough when you hit those terrible twos. The Havanese is a no shed and low allergy pup. Their typical coat will be straight to slightly wavy. Their hair is a little finer so they will need to be combed out two to three times a week to keep them from matting. Use a hard comb to accomplish this. They will also need to go to the groomers about every 8 to 12 weeks to keep them looking just right. This is a very enjoyable dog that will fit nicely into most families and would also be good for the first time owner or the "empty nester."
