About The Bernese Mountain Dog:

The Bernese Mountain Dog is the most well-known mountain dog from Switzerland, distinguished by its long, soft coat. Its origins are actually uncertain, but it likely descended from Roman Mastiffs crossed with sheepdogs during the roman invasion of Switzerland in the first century B.C. The Bernese Mountain Dog survived for centuries as a draft dog and farm dog. The Bernese Mountain Dog was standardized and shown throughout Europe in the early 1900s and arrived in America in the 1920s. A Bernie is good natured, very gentle, and friendly. They are calm and loving; they do have a strong independent side that does require a dominant owner. They, by instinct, are excellent watch dogs and guardians. They will take a few years to get out of the ?puppy stage?. A Bernie will bark to ward off what it thinks is a threat, you will want to discourage this, and they also may drool. Socialization at an early age is recommended, they will be friendly to any child, visitor or other animal that it knows. They are cautious of strangers and animals they do not know. A Bernie will protect its family when necessary, even at the cost of its life. They are very loving to their family, especially children, and to the other pets within the family. Socialization at an early age with all members of the family is critical. Because they are large dog they will need some exercise outside the house, a good run in the back yard or a nice walk around the block. As a pup that is growing it is very important to not over exert them, they need their energy for their muscles and bones to develop properly. They absolutely love the snow and the winter which will not even faze them. They are not an overly active dog, but they still need a little exercise. Many Bernies do enjoy the water as well. They would rather go hiking on a trail with you than a run in the park. A Bernie is very trainable, they want nothing more than to please its master, they are very sensitive to the tone of its trainer's voice. Your training should be calm, consistent, and patient. They are very obedient when trained. Since they are used to open air and mountains, they may want to run, leash training is a must. Grooming will require a combing several times a week with a hard comb or pin brush. This will control the hair. They do not need to go to the groomers. When feeding a large dog as the Bernie it is very important to feed a food that is designed for large breed dogs, DO NOT feed regular puppy food as this will cause serious bone development issues. In my opinion, if you like big dogs, a Bernie can't be beat!!!
