About The Wheaten, Soft Coated:

Wheatens, or as I call them "Sweety Wheaties," are without a doubt one of my favorite breeds. The Wheaten originated in Ireland and was used primarily as a farm dog. Despite being breed for the farm they do much better as house pets. When a Wheaten is born they are almost all black in color. As they age they turn to a dark brown with a black mask and then eventually to a wheaten color, that would be a golden color the same as you would see in a mature wheat field. This litter represents the second generation for me as I have mom and dad as well as the grandparents. Wheatens are a no shed dog, one of the few in the medium weight category that don't shed. They are not considered to be hypo-allergenic. They are active but are not considered to be hyperactive. As pups they are very playful but do tend to slow a little as they age. They are highly affectionate with their family but may be cautious of strangers. They will make a great alarm system but not necessarily a great guard dog. A Wheaten is in the terrier family of dogs, despite that, they are not like most terriers. They are gentle and loving and responsive to their owner's wishes, most of the time. They are still terriers so they can be a little head strong at times. They are usually good with other pets and children if they are raised and socialized that way from the start. This is a breed that you don't want to raise in a sheltered environment. Socialize them from the start to the type of lifestyle that you want them to have in the future. Some of their activity needs will be meet playing in the house but this is one that also needs some outside time. They love being out and are a great candidate for long walks or even jogs with you. Like all terriers they are highly intelligent but also have that obstinate side to them. You will want your training to be direct, black and white with no grey areas. They have the ability to outthink you. If you give them an inch they will take it. Make sure everyone in the house is on the same page with the house rules. Yes on the couch or no doesn't matter but make it the same for all members or the house. Use treats and positive praise will go a long way. They do want to please you so the happiness in your voice is music to their ears. Don't let bad behaviors go unnoticed, correct them a.s.a.p. and if you see them forming some unacceptable behaviors that you can't control than you should enroll in some puppy classes and get some professional help. A well trained dog is much more enjoyable to be around. Since they are a no shed dog some grooming is needed. You will want to comb them out several times a week with a hard comb to keep them mat free. Another nice thing about them is that their hair grows rather slowly, you will only need to go to the groomers about every 12 weeks. You can tidy them up yourself with a pair of grooming scissors and wash them in the tub form time to time. Wheatens are such an enjoyable medium sized dog, once you actually meet them you will be as sold as I am.
