About The Shih Tzu:

The word Shih Tzu means Lion Dog. The Shih Tzu was originally from Tibet, where it is known to have existed since about the first century AD. They were brought to China in the seventeenth century and were bred in Peking imperial courts to be a pet and companion for royalty. They were especially popular during the Ming dynasty. Shih Tzus are not overly active but do like to play. Most of their play needs are easily met running around the house. They still do enjoy going outside and are usually content to take a short walk, play in the backyard or follow its owner around the house. They bond well with the family and will do well with children of all ages, they get along well with other pets. A caution to the younger children, make sure that they have adult supervision so that no accidents or rough handling occurs. They are friendly, outgoing and have a good sense of humor. They have a long body, short legs and a full, curly tail. They are known to have a pushed-in nose and a flatter face. Because of their shorter face a Stenotic type of nose is common (this is a narrowed nasal passage). This may cause some snoring during nap time; you will also want to watch any type of hard play time during the hot and humid summer months. They are known to have a little stubborn side so you will want your training to more direct in nature. Use a lot of positive praise along with some treats to get your point across. Make sure that everyone in the house is on the same page with their method. Have a little patience and be consistent and you will achieve your goal. Their coat is long and straight. This is a non-shedding breed and may be good for some people with lite dog allergies. They will need combed or brushed several time per week using a hard comb or pin brush. They may also need to see a professional groomer every eight weeks to keep them tidy. All in all Shih Tzus are a great dog and family pet and I know that you will enjoy them as much as we do. This would be a good dog for the first time owner.
