About the Corgi:

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi originates from Wales along with its larger cousin the Cardigan. Their original purpose was for herding and farm work. The Corgi is very popular amongst horse lovers. Being a farm dog they are both sturdy and very hardy. They are playful, affectionate and very energetic, they do like to run. They are considered very intelligent and confident. They tend to love everyone so they don't make a great watch dog. They have great loyalty to their family and will enjoy all types of games and play. They do enjoy being outside and running around, they will also enjoy walks and going to the doggie parks to see their friends. Their activity needs will require more than just playing in the house. Outside time will be needed. They are very good with children with all ages and get along well with other pets as well. If you have young children you will most likely see them trying to herd and control the kids while playing, this may not be a bad thing. Training with them should be simple since they respond well and don't have a stubborn side to them. You will be able to use a variety of methods from voice commands, bells and whistles as well as hand signals. They want to please you, so use this to your advantage. Use praise and treats coupled with repetition and consistence. Teach them how to properly walk on a leash as they are much stronger than you would think for their size. These guys will shed so use a pin or rake brush on them several times a week to remove the dead hairs. You should also feed a natural diet that does not contain corn. Corn will dry out their coat and make the hairs more brittle so they will shed more. A natural diet will keep them "looking good." You can bathe them as needed but try to not overdo it, they need the natural oils in their skin and coat. When washing, use a good quality dog shampoo, again natural is better. You will find Corgis to be a great addition to the family and will bring you many years of happiness.
