About the Australian Shepherd:

The Australian Shepherd, more affectionately known as an Aussie, does not actually originate in Australia. It is believed that some farmers brought ancestors of these dogs with them when they immigrated to Australia. They came to the US during the gold rush in 1849. The breed as we know it today was developed here in the states. Both of the parents are actual working farm dogs, watch out the pups may round up the kids also. The Aussie is intelligent and eager to learn. It is relaxed in their attitude, loyal, and devoted, bonding very closely with its family, and protective of them. They are confident and lively; they are known to behave like puppies and will remain active all their life. They are a great companion with children of all ages and other pets. They will keep an eye on the young ones for you. They can be wary of strangers as they are territorial by nature. They are affectionate and kindhearted. Because of their intelligence they can easily become bored. You will want plenty of intra-active toys for them to occupy their mind. They do require frequent socialization with their family and proper exercise. Only some of their exercise needs will be met in the house. They love the outdoors and will demand it. If you give them a nice yard to run in along with some sticks to play with they will be happy. They are a great walking or jogging buddy as well and will also enjoy trips to the doggie parks. Training an Aussie is fairly simple, they learn quickly and easily and want nothing more than to please you. This is a good candidate for games like flyball and agility competitions also a great consideration for a Therapy dog. Like any training, make sure they know what it is that you want and expect them to do and they will do it. They have a medium length coat with a thick undercoat; this is why they can be outside in all temperatures. They will shed so you will want to comb them out regularly using a hard comb and in the spring an undercoat rake will help to remove all that undercoat. An Aussie is wonderful and beautiful dog that makes a great addition to any family. This is an excellent choice for the first time owner.
