About The German Shepherd:

The German Shepherd originated in the 19th century and was originally breed for sheepherding. Today they are better known for their talent in search-and-rescue, police and military work, guard dog, guide dog, drug-sniffing and of course a pet. The breed was designed to be brave, intelligent and have great stamina for running. The breed gained in popularity in America with the show Rin Tin Tin. In America you will find a Shepherd to be around 24? tall at the shoulders and weighing around 80#. The German lines from across the sea tend to be much bigger. There are different coats and colors for Shepherds but usually you will find them with a course longer outer coat which acts like a rain coat, also is a softer coat underneath for warmth. They also range in colors from almost all brown to almost all black and any combination and mix in between. A Shepherd is considered to be highly intelligent and unbelievably loyal. They are brave and are known to be fearless but are not considered to be hostile or aggressive. Their ability to guard and protect is breed into them, everyone feels safe when a Shepherd is in the house. They are the ideal watch dog. Their devotion and loyalty to their family are hard to bet, this makes them a wonderful companion and pet. Despite their size they are a versatile breed, adapting to many different lifestyles. They are very territorial which also means they are most likely not going to run away from a fight. They will not be friendly to strangers or unwanted visitors, they will be able to sense this. Training is critical here, you must be able to control your dog at all times. They may not do well with strangers however the opposite is true of their family. They love them, all of them and are great with kids and other dogs but only if they are socialized from the start to this type of lifestyle. Training a Shepherd is relatively easy as they are very eager students. You will find them very responsive to their owners voice and commands. The change in your voice tone will tell them if you are happy or not. Sufficient exercise will be needed. Only in the house will not be enough, they must have some outside time as well. A nice back yard to play and run around in, a good brisk walk or trip to the park will work as well. Because of their intelligence they will need some things to keep their mind busy. You will want some intra-active toys for them to play with and chew on. A Shepherd will shed so some grooming will be necessary. You will want to comb them out a couple times a week with a hard comb to get down to the skin. In the spring when they will drop their winter coat you would want to use a shedding comb/blade to get this out or it will be all over your house. German Shepherds are known to bloat easily. You can help this with an elevated dish that sits about chest height not on the floor. You should never feed them only once a day as this will encourage them to gobble and possibly bloat. Instead feed them 2 or 3 times a day or better yet would be to feed them free choice so they know the food is always there. A German Shepherd is a wonderful family dog but does require some of your time to be happiest.
