About This Breed:
A Shih-Poo is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Poodle. Shih Tzu mixes are quickly becoming very popular in the designer dog craze. A Shi-Poo is a no shed dog and very good for most of you with allergies. They are very loving and playful but not too crazy. They enjoy the companionship of their family and make a great lap warmer in the winter. They may be cautious of strangers. They are social with those they know and entertaining and will enjoy a good game of tug or rolling the ball. They might be a little excitable when you first come home which may lead to excessive barking, don’t encourage this behavior and it won’t become an issue. Most of their exercise needs will be met in the house or apartment but they will still enjoy going outside to help plant those flowers and bask in the sunshine. They will enjoy short walks around the block as well. They are good with children and other pets but socialization should begin at an early age. Young children will need to learn how to properly handle a young pup of this size. The Poodle side adds a nice touch of intelligence and training should not be too difficult. On the other hand the Shih Tzu side could also add a little stubbornness. You will want to keep your training method direct and to the point. Be consistent and patient, use praise and some treats to get your point across. If you find yourself having trouble communicating with your new family member than we would suggest that you enroll in some puppy classes. Do this sooner than later. Their coat is wavy and will require combing out several times a week with a hard comb or a pin brush. They will also need to go to the groomers about every 8 weeks. Your groomer will wash, clip, trim their nails and also pluck the extra hair out of their ears. You will enjoy their personality, and will find them to be a great addition to the family.
