About This Breed:
The Shiba Inu is an ancient Japanses breed; they were developed as a hunting dog and were used for hunting birds and small game for more than 2,000 years. The Shiba is a result of the interbreeding of three ancient breeds: the Sanin, the Mino, and the Shinshu. They are the most popular dog in Japan. They are in the Spitz family of dogs and especially the Northern breeds. This group has a more wolfish appearance, prick ears, sharp muzzle, broad chest, thick double coat and a strong well-muscled body, and yes the long bushy curl tail. They thrive in cold winter climates. They come in a variety of colors, red, red and white, white, black and black and tan. They can also vary in size from 18 to 30 pounds and will stand around 14 inches at the shoulders. They are very bright and also incredibly independent, which translate into strong willed. They are curious, cheerful and watchful. They bond very closely with their family but will be aloof and reserved toward strangers. They will do well with children and other pets but they do need to be raised in that type of environment and well socialized. One nice thing about them is that they seldom bark but have more of a shriek to them. As with larger Spitz dogs they have incredible stamina so they will need some time to really run outside, playing in the house won’t be enough. They would be a good candidate for a jogging partner. Shibas are very intelligent but because of their independent thinking training should seem like playtime to them. This is not the dog for an inexperienced owner, they will outthink you. Puppy classes are a great idea for any owner and maybe even a more personalized training with a certified trainer. There will be no need for a groomer for them as they will shed. You will want to brush them out several times a week to remove any dead hairs. I would suggest either a shedding blade/tool or a rubber curry brush. This is a delightful and upbeat dog to have around, just make sure they are properly trained and socialized and you will have a wonderful pet.
