About This Breed:

The Schnauzer originates from Germany and was originally used as a working dog on the farm. A Schnauzer is a no shed pup but they are only OK for those with allergies. They are an intelligent and very loyal pup. They are alert, loving and playful. They will make and excellent companion and family pet who will do well with children and other pets. They are big enough to handle some rough and tumble play but caution must be used when they are still young. They are a happy dog that thrives on the company of its family. Being so devoted to their family, they may complain if they know that you are getting ready to leave and don’t take them with you. Give them plenty of intra-active toys to keep them occupied while you are gone. They are an active and playful pup that will play in the house to meet most of its needs. They will enjoy a good game of tug or fetch; try not to break anything in the house. They do love going outside and will like to run the yard and go with you on walks around the block. They will also enjoy going out even in the snow. With their intelligence they should be fairly easy to train. The Schnauzer is a little obstinate so keep your eye on that. Keep you training direct, communicate to the pup what it is that you expect from him, be patient and consistent, and use praise and treats for positive reinforcement. If you find yourself having some trouble with the training process than we would suggest that you enroll in some basic puppy classes, this will be money well spent. Their coat is soft and wavy and will require combing out several times a week with a hard comb or pin brush. I would not suggest a slicker brush as this will turn them into a fuzz ball. They will also need to go to the groomers about every 8 to 12 weeks for a clipping. Most people put them into a puppy cut but the show Schnauzer cut is adorable too, that choice is yours. This is a well-rounded dog that does well in most environments.
