About This Breed:
The Dachshund, pronounced Dash-Hound, is also known as a wiener dog or a Doxi. Originally a sporting dog from Germany where the larger Doxis were trained to hunt Badgers and Foxs. Here in the states they are a house pet. A Doxis main colors are red or black and tan; there are now variations to that with piebalds and dapples. They also come in three coat types, short, long, and wire. They are very devoted to their family but not so much to strangers. This will make then an alert watch dog. They love children provided they learn from the start how to properly handle them. A Doxi has an elongated back and is prone to back injuries, don’t let them jump off the coach or anything high, use some doggie steps or plastic stepping stool. They do have a mind of their own and can be stubborn at times. They are strong willed but are very intelligent. They are brave, cunning, and vigilant. Training should be direct as to what it is you want them to do and what they are allowed to do. Keep it positive and use praise. For the first time owner, puppy classes would be advised. A Doxi is not hyper, however they are very active and love to play and run. Most of their exercise needs will be met in the house but they do love being outside as well. They still like to follow their noses when outside, they think that they are tracking something. As mentioned they are good with children and other pets as long as they are socialized from the start. Grooming needs should not be too difficult, use a slicker brush to remove any dead hairs. No trips to the groomers will be needed unless you want them cleaned up occasionally, you can wash as needed at home, try not to over wash as that will dry out their natural skin oils. This will be a fun pup and I know that you will enjoy them as much as we do.
