About This Breed:

Chihuahua’s originated in Mexico with claims to being the world’s smallest dog. They come in a short coat, which is most commonly seen, and also a long coat. There are also two body styles of Chihuahua; the Taco Bell dog is an apple head, small and compact. The high majority of apple heads have what is known as an open fontanel, this is due to the “bubble” structure of their skull, and this is where the plates of the skull do not completely close creating an opening. Many Chihuahua’s will live a completely normal life with this; care must be given to the head region of the dog to avoid any blunt trauma. The other style is known as a deer head and will have a longer and more drawn out body more similar to that of a Terrier. Chihuahua’s serve no purpose other than to be your best friend and social companion; this is a role that they play well. They are much more content to have nothing to do and will be happy just laying around in the sunshine or under the blankets with you on those cold days. They do not bark a lot and will fit in the smallest of apartments. They will bond to the entire family but are known for picking their favorite. For their size they are very brave and loyal, affectionate but can be a little sensitive. They are an intelligent dog but due to their size most potty training is done with piddle pads or artificial grass. If you’re going to go outside than a sweater will be a must in the winter. Their exercise needs are minimal. Playing in the house will be just fine with them. The only grooming you will need to do is using a curry brush on them to remove the dead hairs, not like a dog of this size sheds a lot. An occasional dunk in the kitchen sink with a Ph balanced shampoo for dogs and you’re done. A natural diet that does not contain corn will help with coat quality and maintain a softer feel, thus less shedding. They have a more outgoing personality and will fit very nicely in a purse. These little guys are not the best fit for a family with young children. They will get along nicely with other pets and older children that are being supervised.
